It's... Good.
In general, A Hat in Time is good game. I was a kickstarter backer (disclaimer). I'm not disappointed with it at all, but it just isn't quite the game I hoped it would be. It is not, by any means a bad game.
It is competent on every level. To make comparisons to older "collectathon" games, however, it reminds me more of Spyro than Banjo-Kazooie. I also personally do not like the objective-based tasks and would prefer to get to explore the worlds more on my own and discover things for myself. This is something I don't like about SM64. It isn't a bad approach to gameplay, but it isn't quite what I wanted out of a game like this.
Solid B+.
