Death End Re;Quest Cleavage Censored In Japan On PS4
Sony’s new censorship policies for the PS4 has claimed another victim. This time Compile Heart’s Death End re;Quest was censored right out of the gate for its release in Japan.
Sony has been on an anti-Japanese game warpath lately. A dedicated fan has compared an earlier trailer to the latest PlayStation trailer, and found one very large edit where a tube top has been added to a character's outfit
We've been seeing this a lot lately with Sony and PlayStation. Which, I think is kind of odd, since they were so excited to show off a lesbian kiss in the The Last Of Us 2 trailer. So far, it seems like that type of content can stay on PlayStation. Meanwhile, drawn content in a niche Japanese game must be edited.
This reminds me very much of earlier Fire Emblem "localization" efforts, where we saw outfits, sometimes very poorly, edited to cover up skin of characters.
The fact that this is appearing in a mere trailer is disheartening. There's no more confirmed edits, but it's very likely that we'll see more and more as time goes on.
But, the big issue is is that Death End Re;Quest is a PlayStation exclusive, so for the time being we won't have an uncensored version of the game to compare it to. So, it's entirely possible we won't know what's been changed and who has been covered up. Hopefully we can find more fans who can search through earlier material and find more changes. However, it's unlikely at this time, since we won't have much to compare it to. In the end, gamers will probably find more edits, but a lot will go undetected because the original version of the game and the developer's art will be lost.
I'm hoping we can get an unedited PC or (wow I can't believe I'm saying this even though it's more likely) a Switch port. But, these changes might have already made it into a master build that would be used for further ports.
Both trailers are Japanese and for the PS4. Death End Re;Quest is getting a Western release, but these edits have made it into the Japanese version, so they're definitely coming to the Western release.
Sony's war on waifus continues and claims another victim. Unfortunately, this time there's no other platforms to escape this.
