EA has announced that EA Sports PGA Tour for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will have the exclusive rights to the four Major Championships: the Masters Tournament, PGA Championship, U.S. Open Championship, and The Open Championship. This announcement includes the 2021 and 2022 PGA Championship, which will be held at Kiawah Island Golf Resort and Southern Hills Country Club respectively. That’s part of a partnership with PGA of America to virtually recreate the PGA Championship, letting you can play to with the historic Wanamaker Trophy and take in Champion’s Ceremony, and play as and against past PGA Champions. All of this ties into the career mode that will let you take on THE PLAYERS Championship, the FedExCup Playoffs and others, including many of the world’s best known golf courses, and featuring plenty of professional golfers. With EA planning this to be a yearly franchise once more, they will feature a leaderboard with the “Team of 20” PGA Club Professionals. These people will have earned a spot in the PGA Championship, out of the 28,000 members of PGA of America. Additionally, EA are tapping the PGA Education and Player Development Departments to help design the game’s tutorials and coaching challenges, teaching skills that work in-game, but could also be transferrable to the real world. It’s a bit of a coup for EA, which hasn’t had a golf game since Rory McIlroy PGA Tour in 2015. That game was their one and only entry on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and left a vacuum of golf games that went unfilled by a licensed game until HB Studios’ The Golf Club series picked up the PGA Tour license in 2018. That game series morphed into PGA Tour 2K21 with last year’s release, but sporting rights are a tricky field to navigate, and 2K’s non-exclusive license left the door open for EA to announce the return of EA Sports PGA Tour earlier this year. Now EA has managed to do what 2K didn’t or couldn’t, and line up licenses for the four majors (though PGA Tour 2K had fictionalised renditions of each). 2K does have Tiger, though: Source: press release
