Fallout 76 Beta News on Speed Hacking Exploit: Gameplay Tied to Frame Rate

0

This is a news story and opinion piece for the Fallout 76 gameplay beta for PC. It has been found during the Bethesda Fallout 76 Beta for PC that the player’s movement speed and weapon speed are tied to the frame rate of the game. This has allowed players to exploit the game by simply modifying the INI file to uncap the game’s frame rate. Of course, I couldn't resist offering up my commentary on the matter.

This is pretty catastrophic. You can just look at the ground to raise your frame rate and then run faster. If you have a high hertz monitor (like 120hz or more), you'll have to leave the game at 60fps to play at standard speed.

The entire game is tied to frame rate, meaning you'll just need a good graphics card (or to lower your settings as low as possible with lowest resolution), uncap your FPS, and you'll run, shoot, and do everything faster than everyone else.

You may be thinking this is just a beta and it can be fixed, but these types of things are usually buried deep within the game's engine and it's not trivial to fix. Maybe they'll find some way to lock the frame rate at 60fps, but it will still punish gamers who can't pull 60fps or have some frame drops. Even if Bethesda takes away INI file editing to change frame rate caps, it's an extremely easy way to hack the game and give yourself a speed hack. I expect there to be a huge speed hack problem with Fallout 76.

I know know about you, but having my computer start lagging and then slowing down and having everyone else have an advantage over me if they have better frame rate seems absolutely rage inducing. The fact that there's no problem with this working online seems to indicate there's no anti-cheat for speed hacks. Meaning that the game itself is probably extremely prone to cheats. Although it does give Bethesda a means to fix Fallout 76's speed hack problem.
