Knockout City Initial Impressions
Knockout City is currently free to play until the end of May 2021. I thought I would give it a try because I liked the art style and it looked interesting. Even though I was a little put off by EA. I was very pleasantly surprised by Knockout City.
I've noticed there's a big trend to try and bring back arena shooters with a new coat of paint. Splatoon did it, and I really feel like Knockout City is trying to do it too. It's currently just 3v3 death matches. You have several movement options, a double jump, dash, and paraglider. Which is really cool and it makes it feel fast and like you have choices, much like earlier arena shooting games.
But the really cool thing about Knockout City is how you use balls instead of guns. Meaning you can have one ball in your hand at a time, so you've basically got one shot to make it count. But you can catch balls being thrown at you, just like in dodgeball. So you can get some really fun moments when you're moving all over the map trying to find cover and protect yourself, and throwing the ball back and forth between you and an enemy trying to see who screws up first and takes a hit.
You have two hits in Knockout City death match right now, then it's a knockout. After 10 knockouts of the opponent team you win.
Overall this game is a lot of fun, there's a lot of really cool situations that unfold. They really managed to make a game that's pretty exciting and fun to play. I was really sure about the dodgeball aspect at first, but after playing it it adds a lot of unexpected depth and it's a lot of fun.
