www.thesixthaxis.comBack in April, Cold Symmetry and Playstack announced the action RPG Mortal Shell, a game with more than a few hints of Dark Souls to it. Now they’ve revealed the first official gameplay, alongside the news that a beta will be held from 3rd July, ahead of release across PlayStation, Xbox and PC later in 2020. The team are self-confessed fans of the Dark Soul series, but they’ve put their own spin on that style of action RPG. While your character must travel through the land littered with the dead and creatures that pose danger there are also allies. They don’t actually know they’re allies because they’re dead too, but that’s just semantics. In Mortal Shell the player can occupy the bodies – the shells – of former warriors to access abilities to face off against other enemies. It is basically a bit of sustainability and recycling, I guess though with violence thrown in for good measure. The longer your character is linked to a mortal shell of these warriors the stronger the bond becomes and the better the skills become, with the four different shells providing different playstyles, with a deep impact on the gameplay. A twist on Dark Souls’ death mechanics, you can be knocked out of your shell when your health reaches zero. This leaves you in a severely weakened form with just a single hit point, until you can get back into your shell. You can only climb back into your shell a set number of times though, so you’ll want to be careful. For more on the game, Cold Symmetry spoke to IGN for their Summer of Gaming expo: A PC beta has been confirmed for Mortal Shell, kicking off on 3rd July, so players will be able to get a taste of what to expect before the game releases. To have a chance of taking part you need to join the game’s Discord channel which you can do by clicking here. Following the beta, Mortal Shell is going to be released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, coming out later in 2020. More details will be announced soon.
