Cross between platforming and RPG
Paper Mario was a great mix of platforming and RPG games. Nintendo was heading in the right direction with Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, but they really refined it in Paper Mario with the power of Nintendo 64.
You have a field screen and a battle screen. You move around the field screen and when you encounter an enemy, it switches to battle, much like RPGs of this era.
