The first in a series of mildly story-heavy puzzle games, Professor Layton and the Curious Village includes 100 mandatory puzzles - to complete the story - and an additional 35 optional puzzles, and 27 weekly puzzles for a total of 162 puzzles. However, the weekly puzzles are no longer available without the use of a gameshark, or emulation, due to the DS wi-fi connection service being shut down in mid-2014.
At certain points in the game the player will be blocked from proceeding with the story until a certain number of puzzles are completed, which can be found by clicking on the scenery, objects, or characters.
The story centers around Professor Hershel Layton, and his assistant Luke, who are invited to St Mystere to investigate the mystery of the Golden Apple, regarding an inheritance. The player is tasked at solving various puzzles - ranging from sliding block puzzles, math puzzles, riddles, visual puzzles, and more - in order to move the story along, via point and click interface using the DS's touchscreen.
The animated cutscenes are fully voice acted (animation by P.A. Works), and important story dialogue is as well, however normal dialogue throughout most of the game is not.
