Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Coming to Nintendo Switch in Japan via Cloud Gaming

+1

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is making the jump to Nintendo Switch in Japan later this week, all operating through a dedicated cloud service.

This is some horrible news. Cloud games run on another computer or device, and then are streamed to you. This means, if you're in a place on your Nintendo Switch without internet, you're probably not going to be able to play the game. It also means you get network lag and latency, even if you're not playing online. That means your button presses and movements inside the game can be affected.

I hope this isn't what everyone thinks, and it's just that parts of the game are streamed to the Switch and then rendered on the Switch. Because if it's remotely rendered and streamed to the Switch, this can set a bad precedent for future games.

Renting games for any amount of time is awful, so is never actually having a physical copy of the game. It also means that once Capcom decides to shut down the servers for the Cloud version of the game, you're not going to be able to play it any more.

Right now, this is just a Nintendo Switch issue. But I'm sure lots of other developers would love to turn their games into a service. It can't be pirated, and they'll make more money off of it. Lets all hope this doesn't work out very well, for gamer's sake. This is definitely a horrible direction for video games to head in.
