The game is rather short to beat the first time through, it should only take a few hours. The real enjoyment comes from the fact that the levels are filled with secrets that open up different paths to different levels. Levels are also laced with secrets which involve you shooting things, or transforming (like with the Arwing turning into a walker). Star Fox Zero also makes use of scoring. It's the type of game you would play a few times, at least, just to try and beat your high score. I haven't tried it yet, but it has an interesting coop mode where one person flies and the other aims weapons. It seems like it'd be a lot of fun, having to work together with someone. I imagine that it's one of those things that you could get really good at with some practice. But, the point I'm trying to make is that while the game is short, there's a lot of reason to go back and keep playing it, either alone or with a friend.
