Plays well

The controls are good, you have control of Mario when he's jumping, and you don't have to fight controls. The NES era was a time when you'd have games that didn't even play or handle right, with a character that wouldn't do what you wanted it to. Super Mario Bros. makes you feel like it was your mistake when you die, and like you accomplished something when you make it through a difficult part.
