Everything New In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Here's some video analysis of what's new in Super Smash Bros Ultimate from the E3 build. There's a lot of changes, and these changes seem to make the game a lot more offensive, instead of defensive. If you remember when Smash 4 came out, rolling (and other defensive moves) were super OP.
Air dodging has been changed, there's no major landing lag. You also have directional input in your air dodge. This lets you move away when you're stuck in a combo. It will make getting out of things like Bayo's combo much, much easier. I mentioned Smash Ultimate will be more offense oriented, and here's where it comes in. You only get one air dodge between each time you touch the ground. Meaning, you better make it count. You may remember that Smash 4 has a low cool down for air dodging, so you can basically spam it pretty easily, even if you miss your air dodge, you can still air dodge again in Smash 4 and come out safe. It looks like that will be gone in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
Perfect shielding has been changed, it now triggers by letting go of shield at the right time, instead of pressing it at the right time. This looks like a move to try and get people to be rewarded for letting go of the shield button, instead of holding onto it after a perfect shield.
You now get penalized for spamming rolling. The first roll is around as fast as Smash 4's roll. They have a cool down, but they will get slower and slower up to the 6th roll. If you avoid rolling too much, your roll speed will slowly return to normal. If you keep spamming it, it looks like it gets pretty slow, and you'll get punished by a decent player.
Jumping speed has been improved, it's much faster, more like melee speed. There is also a short jump attack button you can do by pressing attack and jump almost at the same time.
You can now break out of grabs by grabbing each other at the same time. They more or less cancel each other out. There's also a grab cool down, where after being grabbed, there's about a one second delay before you can be grabbed again. This is just like in Smash 4, but now you are blinking to indicate that you can't be grabbed. A nice feature that indicates something that I'm sure a lot of people weren't entirely aware of.
Smash attacks can be charged for longer, and they have more knock back the longer you hold the attack back.
Dashing is improved, it's a bit faster, but most importantly, you can attack out of a dash. This opens up a huge opportunity to be far more aggressive when playing. Perfect pivot is gone, but the improvements in movement make up for it being gone, it might even be a big enough improvement that wave dashing isn't really that strong any more. Not that it matters, since wave dashing and perfect pivot both seem to be missing from Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
The ledge game has not changed very much, it seems pretty similar.
Rage is back, and it's toned down a little bit. Rage lets you have more launching power the higher your damage gets, it's a sort of handicap if you are getting your butt kicked. Regardless, it's been nerfed.
After getting hit, you no longer face your opponent after being hit.
1v1 battles have larger damage, to make the rounds go faster. I think this is a very nice improvement, as it seems 1v1 matches won't be 5 minute long battles any more.
Knock back has a much higher initial launch rate, which then slows down. This seems like a way to try and prevent certain characters from putting you into massive combos.
You can also tech after getting foot stooled. So you don't have to worry too much about that annoying spinning when you can't do anything.
There are a few changes to how the c stick works, but it sounds like it's all going to change from the E3 demo.
You now get a minimap when you're knocked off the screen, so you can see where you are (and so can your opponent). The further off the screen you are, the smaller your magnifying glass gets. In 1v1, you also get a close up when you make a critical hit on someone. They are definitely trying to make Smash Bros Ultimate a lot more entertaining to watch.
Of course, all characters that have ever been in any Smash Bros game is back! This is a huge deal, because a lot of favorites have been cut, like Ice Climbers. Star Wolf, etc. There has been also a lot of cut stages re-added.
Overall, it sounds like Super Smash Bros Ultimate sounds like it's really going to improve over Smash Bros 4, and it's going to be a lot more aggressive and exciting to play.
