V-Rally 4 Review
Released in the late 90s, the halcyon days of the original PlayStation, this was a rich time for rally games. Fast forward a whole 16 years since the third game and we have a new game in the V-Rally franchise, V-Rally 4, though finding it on the shelves of a HMV is much less likely.
This was a big opportunity to revive a long forgotten franchise, and it seems like they blew it. The handling seems to be stuck in some sort of purgatory between sim and arcade racer, taking the worst of both worlds and throwing them together in one game.
The main campaign seems very similar to the DiRT games, where you have a crew and you work your way up from crappy cars to great cars through your career. But really, this is a trope of modern racing games and it's more surprising when the main single player mode is something other than this.
The game play can be fun, but it seems like there's just so many things wrong with the game that it weighs it all down. Hopefully this can be fixed with some updates, but who knows? There are some really cool ideas like gymkhana and some variety in game modes, so there is some potential. But they have a ways to go to make this game great, if they can get there.
