Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Sales Exceeded Developers Expectations Outside of Japan

During an interview, Monolith Soft Executive Director Tetsuya Takahashi expounded on Xenoblade's sales exceeding his expectations.

I'm really glad to hear this. Xeno series as a whole has always been pretty under-rated. Xenoblade Chronicles was a great JRPG stuck on a system that most people thought was casual. Xenoblade Chronicles X suffered from a lot of localization woes, enough to scare a lot of gamers away. Xeno games before that were a bit more niche and weren't super popular.

It's great to see Xenoblade doing so well, hopefully they can keep making complex games like they have been. This is a good sign for the future, I'm really happy to see it as a huge xenoblade fan.

Personally, I feel like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 selling so well in North America and Europe has a lot to do with the localization being a lot less memed up and hipster. People really were excited for another Xenoblade after the original Xenoblade Chronicles. And then, while I personally enjoyed Xenoblade Chronicles X despite the awful localization, the series took a different turn and really wasn't quite what fans of the original had hoped for. Not to mention the localization and politics behind the localization team that did Xenoblade Chronicles X really left a lot of gamers skipping that one.

But Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is a solid return to form, has no major localization or political issues, and is a solid game. Here's to hoping that the next Xenoblade Chronicles keeps on with the same formula, just with some more improvements and polish.

Nothing specific was stated about actual sales, but it's sold very well overall from what I've heard.
